It’s in the way you dress, man!

So I was reading the news paper today, and I thought this one column was really interesting, and it was also very funny.

The writer was describing his recent experiences he had while he was waiting for a friend of his down town, at Helsinki’s Central Railway Station. What we Helsinkians already know is that in this area there are a lot of bums. The bums gather here like flies on shit, and sometimes they come up to you and ask you for a cigarette, or for a couple of euros… for “the bus ticket back home”.

The writer of this article made a very interesting point, and I thought that was very observant of him to notice it. He told his friend about how so many bums came up to him during the ten minutes he waited there, and his friend said he has the very same problem. Later, while meeting another friend they discussed this issue, and this third person had no idea what they were on about. No bums ever come up to him to bother or harass him.

Now we come to the interesting part. This writer said he always dresses nice, and so does his friend, the one he waited for at the Railway Station, but this third person always looks angry and “seems to have got his clothes from a less than empathic motorcycle club.”

So apparently the bums choose you for their target based on how you look, and the writer argues that, sadly, the clothes does make the man and he continues: “Maybe I should switch my T-shirt with the Pikku Kakkonen (a children’s television show) logo to an Impaled Nazarene band shirt that says Smoke Crack and Worship Satan?”

Do you have problems with bums harassing you? Tired of them asking you to pay their bus fare back home, or for that last bottle of beer? Don’t dress so nice!

To Shop Like A Man

Posted in Life with tags , , on December 16, 2007 by Dankku

For those of you that have missed it; I am a man. I’d like to think I’m a “real man” even though I’m fully aware that there are areas I need to improve on. Shopping, however, is not one of them.

When it comes to shopping, I shop like a man, though I think when it comes to shopping clothes I don’t shop like most men since I actually enjoy to shop for clothes.

Yesterday I head out to the Kamppi mall in search of a shirt. I already knew what I wanted; a black shirt. I went inside the mall and looked around for a good store; and the very first store I saw was my favorite chain of men’s ware; Dressmann.

Inside the store, the very first thing I saw was a package of a black shirt and a really beautiful silk tie. I couldn’t find the right size, so I asked one of the sales ladies if there were any bigger sizes of that same kind of package. She said no, so I asked to try on another shirt, and she went and got me one. I tried it on, it fit perfectly, and when I got out of the dressing room she informed me that they did have one of those packages I was looking for in the stockroom. Excellent, I thought, so I paid €19.90 for my stuff and went back home.

The whole thing, including the bus ride to and from the city centre took me a little less than a full hour.

Now, had I been accompanied by a woman I would have had to go to a dozen different shops, I would have been nagged on to get a bunch of stupid clothes I wouldn’t have wanted anyway, and to top it all off I would have been broke and upset. :D
